Tuesdays 9:30-10:30AM
Dive into a world of creativity and culture! This class pairs hands-on art projects with enriching discussions about the lives and works of iconic artists like Marc Chagall and Elizabeth Catlett, as well as the music of celebrated composers such as Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Joanne Shenandoah.
Students will explore techniques like collage, painting with unconventional tools, drawing on dark paper, and working with oil pastels. They'll also create clay and plaster sculptures, carve handprints, and draw scenes inspired by happy memories and great ideas.
As they create, students will listen to music, explore key musical concepts, and gain a deeper appreciation for the intersection of visual and auditory arts. This class is a perfect blend of artistic expression and cultural exploration!
Note: While these two classes are designed to be taken together—since the music components in each class build on one another—they are also structured in a way that they can be taken individually. Students will still benefit from each class independently, as they focus on different aspects of music, movement, and creative expression.
Tuesdays 10:30-11:30AM
In this engaging class, students will take the music concepts learned in Music & Art and apply them through both movement and music-making.
The first five weeks will feature ballet-inspired movement, focusing on balance, expression, and improvisation, while the last four weeks will explore folk and Native American-inspired movement, using storytelling through movement.
Students will also learn basic piano skills for the first five weeks and explore drumming during the last four weeks, developing rhythm, timing, and coordination. Through this combination of movement and music, students will build foundational skills in music theory, rhythm, and self-expression, all while having fun with creative, hands-on activities.
Wednesday 10:30-11:30AM
In this class, students will explore different genres of dance, with a primary focus on jazz and hip hop. They will develop their dance technique through various movements, working on axial and locomotor skills, while learning to move safely through space. Students will demonstrate their understanding of space by performing movements at different levels (high vs. low) and in varying sizes (large vs. small). The class will culminate in a final showcase where students perform the choreography they’ve learned. While this class is designed to complement the Acting & Music class, it can also be taken individually.
Wednesdays 11:30AM-12:30PM
In this class, students will engage in theater acting, puppetry, and choral singing. They will explore acting techniques by identifying settings, sensory details, and story points, while demonstrating active listening and creating appropriate movements and sounds for the story. Students will use their voice and movement to improvise pantomimes and retell rhymes. They will also develop their vocal skills through choral music and perform as a group in the final showcase. While this class is designed to complement the Dance class, it can also be taken individually.
